Colt Goucher Speaks!

This week we have our very first guest blogger.  He does not have great running credentials yet but he has offered to share some unique insights with us.  Let’s hope this is the first of many contributions.

(Thoughts by Colton Mirko Goucher)

I think a lot of people expect me to be a runner but mom and dad tell me I can be whatever I want to be in life.  They say they will be proud of me if I chose to be a businessman or a poet or even a translator for the United Nations.  They say they just want me to be happy and warn me not to listen to anything my uncle Tim tells me.

Even though they assure me that I can be whatever I want when I grow up, I think they are already secretly training me to run.  Last week I caught mommy slipping some GU into my smashed carrots and daddy hooked a heart rate monitor up to my walker.  Even though they say I can be a translator, I have yet to hear anything from baby Rosetta Stone make its way into my bedtime story rotation.  And judging by my dad’s attempts at poetry, that career might not be in the bloodline either.  So that leaves being a businessman.

I spent the last week hanging out with my mom and dad in New York City.  It was my first trip to the Big Apple and I was expecting to visit some office buildings, head down to Wall Street, and maybe even get a chance to meet the e*trade baby, but instead I spent most of my time surrounded by runners talking about running.  I got passed around by some of the fastest runners on the plannet and they all seemed to like it when I would show them my gummy smile.  Apparently mom is some sort of big deal, so she was busy with interviews and appearances while dad and I spent some quality man time together burping and laughing.

Dad also took me on a run through Central Park in my baby jogger.  The sights and sounds were amazing but I have to say I could have done without some of the smells.  I thought my dirty diapers smelled bad, but those big horses pulling the carts were really stinky!

I also experienced my first St. Patties Day in NYC, and saw some of the parade down 5th Avenue.  I was completely obsessed with all the green and the people walking down the street.  I saw a lot of people stumbling, falling down, and acting kind of weird.  My dad said that they got some bad breast milk in their bottles.  I am going to be careful if I ever see green milk in mine!

All in all I have to say the trip to New York was a great experience for me even if it did not bring me any closer to figuring out what I want to do with my life.  I am keeping my options open for now, but hopefully mom and dad will continue to share their love of running with me and introduce me to more nice runners who like to see my gummy smile.

Oh, and for the record, even if I am never a professional athlete like my parents, I will still be able to kick the e*trade baby’s #ss in the 5K!

Here is Mommy crossing the finish line in third.  I wanted her to push me in the stroller during the race so I could cheer her on, but apparently that is “against the rules” Sheesh! (Photo courtesy of Mary Shea)

It was a long hard week so I slept most of the way home in the arms of one of my two favorite runners.  His name is Daddy! (Photo courtesy of Kara Goucher)

Adorable! Congratulations to your mommy and your daddy! Your mommy brought it on Sunday and did a great job. And your daddy won the diaper changing contest. When you have a baby boy, you gotta be fast!

Awwwww Colt you’re soooo super cute! Congrats to your Mom on her Third place and congrats to your dad on his winning the diaper changing contest!!!!!

Well written for such a young age. My wife and I run -not nearly as fast as the Gouchers – and always get the question about our yet unborn and not even “in the oven” future children being runners.

  4. Jim Ballinger says:

Sorry Colt, you just don’t have a shot at not running. My wife and I both ran in college and have continued running road races forever, so both our kids grew up around this fantastic community of runners. It is contagious and will seep in as you sit in your stroller. Both of our kids are in high school now and out running all of our records. What until you see mommy and daddy’s smiles when you first toe the line. Breathtaking.

  5. amazing! I am so bummed I missed Kara’s return to NYC for the half! I was going to run it but ran the New Bedford, MA half instead because it was dedicated to an amazing little boy named Owen Simmons who lost his life to SMA. I hope Colt will one day run with TEAM RUN 4 OWEN! :) Great job Kara-your family is amazing Colt!

So sweet! No matter what you become your mommy and daddy are giving you a wonderful model that running is fun and it feels very good to be healthy. I think my little girl would worry about green breast milk, too!
